A bombing believed to be the work of Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram has occurred in the heart of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno on Wednesday, October 12, 2016.
Scores of traders and travellers are feared dead in the explosion that targeted a popular motor park, Mun Garage, along Maiduguri-Ngamboru-Ngala Road at at 9am, eyewitnesses say.
Ibrahim Abdulkadir, he spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has issued a statement on the incident confirming the death of 8 people in the attack. According to the statement, which was emailed to The Trent, 15 people were injured in suspected suicide bombing.
“Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Nigerian Troops have moved to the scene,” the statement said.
“Eight people have been confirmed dead while fifteen injured victims have been taken to Hospitals within Maiduguri metropolis.
Abdulkadir warned against speculative reporting of the incident saying that “only security agencies are authorised to give full details of the incident after initial investigations on the incident”.
“I thank God for sparing my life,” said Usman Kachalla, a trader told journalists. “I don’t know if it is a suicide bomber, we just heard the blast and I saw my self covered with dust.”
Another eyewitness says that he was lucky to survive the terrorist attack and that he saw dozens of bodies covered the bloody scene.
An official of local vigilante group working to protect the people of Borno against Boko Haram, the Civilian JTF, Alhaji Khalil, confirmed the incident to an online newspaper.
“Yes there was a blast early this morning outside Muna Garage along Mafa road. We have sent our operatives down there; but we have not confirmed the casualty,” Khalif said.
