Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sulaimon Yussuff Lasun, has charged journalists to join active politics. He made the call when he received the ‘Doyen of Constituency Projects” award from the House Press Corps.

Lasun urged journalists to deploy their wealth of experience in the governance of the country. He expressed appreciation about the award, adding that journalists covering the House’ activities were in a prime position to know the contributions of every lawmaker. He also commended the ingenuity of the press corps, especially the time that the planning committee spent in assessing each lawmaker, and their constituency projects.

The deputy speaker said the award would spur him to do more and “will also make other lawmakers to improve their legislative activities.”“I’m proud to be so honoured, because the press is the bastion of democracy. It is whatever you write about us that are believed by the people. I am most happy that this award is coming from the House Press Corps that directly reports our activities.

“It means that you have been closely following each and every one of us. With this award, I am inspired to do more, and I believe that other lawmakers will also sit up.”He promised to take the journalists on a tour of his constituency projects.

Justifying the need for such ventures, he urged the electorates to monitor the projects earmarked for their constituencies to know those who are truly working for them. While stressing the importance of constituency projects, he urged the constituents to always monitor every project that is allocated to their constituencies.

“By that they would be able to engage their representatives to ensure that that such projects are duly executed.”He disclosed that he facilitated the construction of the Ojutu Bridge, along Erinle River on Osogbo /Ilobu/Ifon/Ogbomoso road in Osun State, which was abandoned for about 100 years, which, he said, was 45 per cent completed.

The Chairman of the House Press Corps, Muhammed Umar Puma, said the choice of Lasun as the ‘Doyen of constituency projects’ was taken after a careful assessment, which placed him above other lawmakers in the present assembly. He urged the deputy speaker not to rest on his oars, but to continue working for the benefit of his people.
