Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki today told the Senate in plenary that Gov. Ahmed of Kwara revealed to him that a group of cultists who were due to be tried in Kwara have today been transferred to Abuja on the orders of the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris and fears that a ploy to implicate him is underway.
In a rare outburst, Saraki said that he was drawing attention to this security-related issue in a bid to sensitize his fellow senators and Nigerians and to draw the attention of the international community to the level of rascality and impunity which currently prevails.
The revelation has since changed the course of proceedings of the plenary sessions with the Senate President going to the floor and the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu now directing proceedings. Unanimous expressions of outrage coming in support of Saraki
Contributing to the issue at hand, Senators Aduda (FCT), Na’ Allah (Kebbi), Anyanwu (Imo), Adeyeye (Osun) vehemently called for the matter to be viewed with the utmost degree of seriousness. Senator Marafa (Zamfara) called for the matter to be taken before the President.
Senator Bwacha(Taraba) supporting Marafa said last weekend, he had to go to Plateau State at night under MOPOL guard cos he was travelling through a kidnapping-prone district. He said as soon as he reached Jos, the MOPOL commander at the NASS called to order the MOPOL men to “withdraw and leave him(Bwacha) alone”
Bwacha says he was deposited at a police station that night and that for fear of his life, he had to wait for the MOPOL escort to depart before he went to check into a hotel for he was afraid for his safety and did not want them to know where he was lodged.
Speaking on the matter, Senator Misau (Bauchi) chimes in with full support for the matter to be viewed with all seriousness, saying that it was all about power shows ahead of 2019 elections. Misau says the Senate should send a delegation to Aso Rock & to assume that PMB is not aware of these happenings
Misau says “it is either we respect this democracy or we change it to another thing…we cannot continue to flout the Constitution” and pretend to be running a democracy
Senator Abdullahi Adamu (Nasarawa) aligning with the mainstream view and calls for a meeting with Mr President and that action should be swift on this since the revelation is stark in itself, having come from the governor of Kwara State no less
Senator Alasoadura (Ondo) calls for the joint leadership of the National Assembly to go and see the President. Senator Francis Alimikhena (Edo) calls for the IGP to be alerted before “they are tortured into making false statements” State of the Nation..so we know they torture?
Senator Lawan(Yobe), the Senate Leader, aligns with Marafa’s position and calls for audience with Mr President, fears that some people are taking advantage of the President being unaware, to do certain things which are not permissible.
It will be recalled that The IGP refused to honour the invitation of the senate on three separate occasions. In anger, the upper legislative chamber branded him an enemy of democracy, saying he is unfit to hold any public office.
