The suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari has refuted claims that he was compelled to pay N1.8 million to some senior officers at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
He stated this through a statement issued on his behalf by one of his lawyers, Barr Suleiman Usman, in Abuja.
The statement said, “We are compelled to react to another fake news being peddled around by an unknown yet poorly managed online medium stating that DCP Kyari was Compelled to Pay 1.8 million naira to a very senior officer in Kuje Correctional centre.
“We want to make it clear that at no time was any money demanded from DCP Abba Kyari by any officer in the Correctional centre and he has never given one Kobo to any officer in the facility,” the statement said.
The statement further said Kyari, the most decorated Nigerian police officer ever faces threat in Kuje by “terrorist groups whom he arrested and the Officers in the correctional centre have taken a lot of steps to protect DCP Kyari from these terrorist groups.
The statement noted that, “It quite surprising the way different false publications are coming out daily from people who have no knowledge of what is happening in the correctional centre.”
The statement urged members of the public to ignore “fake news” that have “nothing to do with DCP Abba Kyari because he has decided not to speak to the press or comment on social Media for more than 8 months now.”
Kyari is fighting for bail as his lawyers have applied for his release due to existential threat, he faces at Kuje. The highly decorated officer has claimed innocent of all charges and has vowed to fight all allegations levelled against him saying bad elements and criminals in the society he arrested while he held sway as IRT Boss are out to tarnish his image and reputation.
