Kyari Appointed Nigeria’s OPEC National Representative

Mallam Mele Kyari, the Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has been named Nigeria’s national representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Kyari’s appointment comes ahead of OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB) which precedes the organization’s bi-annual ministerial conference.

The appointment was contained in a statement by Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, NNPC’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division.

Kyari, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Geology/Earth Science, was appointed the country’s national representative to OPEC by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu.

Ughamadu said Kyari will be leading Nigeria’s team to the OPEC ECB which reviews the global oil markets.

The NNPC’s Crude Oil Marketing Chief, whose acquaintance with the petroleum industry spans over 26 years, will alongside the Nigerian delegation make inputs as it affects the country at the OPEC ECB.

Kayri’s appointment may also require him support to Kachikwu, who is Nigeria’s Head of Delegation to the OPEC Conference, in matters pertaining to the country’s roles in OPEC.

The geologist’s vast knowledge of the petroleum industry has helped NNPC’s Crude Oil Marketing Division, which he overseas, to achieve laudable transformation especially in terms of management and sales of the various Nigeria’s crude oil grades.

Kyari’s accomplishments in various capacities have earned him a myriad of honors and awards including the GMD Prize for the Overall Best Performance for NNPC Management (2007), the GED CS Award for best Performance in Leadership (2007), the GM Group Learning Division award for Best Project work, NNPC Management (2007), Examiners award for 1st Runner-up for Effective Presentation (2007), and Citation for Remarkable innovation and work process improvement by NAPIMS (2006).

He has equally embarked on several upstream developments and management projects such as the OPL 209 Reservoir Management Studies, Houston USA, the Bonga Field Reservoir Modelling Studies, Shell Deepwater (USA), the Agbami Project Reservoir Studies, Houston USA, OPL 217/218 Seismic Data Processing Project, Stavanger, Norway, and Chad Basin Integrated Studies and Modelling, Biceps France.

Others include OPL 213 Seismic Data Processing, London UK, OPL 53, OPL 65, OPL 110 OML 96 Seismic Data Processing, IDSL Benin and OPL 110 Data Acquisition, IDSL Benin.
