Twitter Ban: We’ll Respond In Due Course – Russia

Twitter

Russia will take retaliatory measures over Twitter’s decision to ban advertising from all accounts owned by the RT broadcaster and Sputnik news agency at the appropriate moment.

On Thursday, Twitter announced that it had decided to off-board advertising from all accounts owned by RT and Sputnik, effective immediately, due to their alleged meddling in last year’s US presidential election.

Russian Deputy Communications Minister Alexey Volin said on Friday: “we will take [retaliatory steps], when we find it necessary.”

He said Russian Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications will not provide details of the possible retaliatory measures.

Reacting to the ban, Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of Sputnik and RT, expressed her regret over the decision and recalled that Twitter itself had pitched RT to spend huge sums on an advertisement campaign during the election.

Russia Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Twitter’s decision was another aggressive step aimed at blocking actions of Russian media and caused by pressure from US security services.

The spokesperson added that Moscow would take retaliatory measures.
